Chapter 12

What Does It Mean

to Ascend?

This body Sri Ma always advises: become an

explorer of eternity, not a drifter to mortality.

In this section of the book, we will explore the possibility of at-

taining ascension in this very lifetime. To understand ascension more

deeply, let us get a better understanding of what is the supreme real-

ity, what is permanent and impermanent, what choices you can make

in the course of your evolution, and how you choose your process of

life and death. Just as in every other experience in your life, ascension is a choice.

What Is Real?

There are two aspects of life: the unmanifest absolute and the

manifest relative creation. Our universe is made of duality, or pairs

of opposites: light/dark, male/female, yin/yang, up/down, right/wrong, happiness/sadness. In order for a manifest universe to exist, duality is a prerequisite.

However, beyond these pairs of opposites, there is oneness or whole-

ness, which is the ultimate reality. Some people call it God. Others call it the absolute, infinite, transcendent, the gap, the void, being, awareness, consciousness, the unified field, Brahman, Tao, Yi, nirvana, sa-tori, or satchitananda. This absolute oneness is permanent, immortal, nameless, formless, beginningless, endless, unborn, undying, eternal,

and imperishable.

The absolute reality is one. It has no opposite. In the ancient

Upanishads it is described as “Only that which is, was in the begin-

ning, one only, without a second.” 1 In the Bible is said, “Hear, O

Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is One.” 2

Among all the creatures in various spheres, humans have a unique

ability. They can experience this absolute oneness, and they can merge with this oneness. The experience of oneness is the only reality. There is no permanence and therefore no ultimate reality in the impermanent relative creation.

Anything with a name and form is therefore dual and is not that

oneness, although it may embody that oneness—as much as anything

in relative creation can. Until an enlightened or ascended being merg-

es fully with the absolute and thereby completely relinquishes its in-

dividuality, it still operates in leshavidya—the faint remains of duality that maintains individuality in an enlightened soul.

Therefore, anything that can speak to you and give you a message,

such as divine beings or ascended masters, still lives in the relative world. In contrast, the absolute non-dual reality is silent and does not speak.

Choosing Your Pathway

Your soul has lived for millions of years in myriad forms. You have

incarnated as minerals, plants, animals, and possibly other creatures.

Finally you became a human and have already lived as a human for

thousands of lifetimes.

When you began to incarnate as a human, you were granted a pre-

cious gift by the creator. It is called “freedom of choice.” You are the director and sole determiner of your life. Therefore, you can make limitless decisions about life and death in the course of your evolutionary process. These choices affect whether your life is ordinary or extraordinary, whether your lifespan is short or long, and whether you live

a mortal or immortal life. Surprisingly, you have the power to choose

perpetual life.

Here are seven different examples of possible life-and-death op-

tions you might select.
